I was thinking about trying to install some type of up-lighting in my yet to be poured garage slab. These would be under my two post lift and would light the underside of the car when on the lift. It's always a pain having to use a trouble light, I know I'll still need it for work point lighting but for larger illumination I think this idea might be good. Has anyone done or seen this done? There are fixtures for in-ground pools, that have thick glass lenses, and would be small enough to stand walking on. Anyone have other ideas or why this idea is terrible?

I've seen this done in the Griot's Garage catalog. The lights are flush mounted into the floor and are positioned under a lift.

Check out www.griotsgarage.com (http://www.griotsgarage.com)

I know the Griot's Garage print catalog usually has a picture of a huge garage setup with floor mounted lights under a lift.

I looked on the Griots site but didn't see any lights for the floor. I'll have to get one of their catalogs.

Thanks,

Saw your post. What did you end up doing?
I just broke ground and am planning an in-floor light. It was suggested to me by a lift manufacturer I saw our at Hershey last fall-- said it was the best thing he's seen. Worked with my electrician and I think we have a plan. Am getting a SS box fabricated to hold an 8' HO Fluorescent light fixture. It'll have a lip on the top to hold 18" wide Lexan Marguard (resists scratching) sheet material flush with the floor. According to the GE engineer I spoke with, 3/8" should work for this application. The SS box will be attached to PT wood framed in before the floor is poured.
Well, that's the plan so far . . .
